About the Carondelet Neighborhood

The buildings on 7600 – 7608 South Broadway were built in 1892 and housed various small businesses over the next 80 years, including a saddler, pharmacy, dry goods store, and doctors’ offices, as well as residential apartments. Our Sales Office, located at 7525 South Broadway, was home to a JJ Newberry 5-10-25 store, and our showroom at 7529 South Broadway was Katz Dry Goods and before that the Old Town Saloon, dating back prior to 1881.

The Carondelet Historical Society, founded in 1966, has managed to keep Carondelet's history alive. They bought the Des Peres School in 1981, turning it into a historical center complete with a restoration of Susan Blow's 1873 classroom. The Carondelet Community Betterment Federation, founded in 1973, continues to aid the elderly in maintaining their homes, and in 1985, the South Broadway Merchants Association opened with the goal of attracting new businesses. Today, members of the community and developers are refurbishing many turn-of-the-century houses, and a number of new commercial developments will bring new restaurants, shops, and entertainment to the neighborhood.
